I know I've been to this pub before, possibly not long after the pub had been saved from closure, but I don't have the date noted. On this Saturday evening visit, the pub was doing brisk business. There is a single room wrapping around a small bar and a large garden to the rear, which was packed. Judging by the number of bar staff, it looks like the number of customers present was not a surprise. It was also good to see plenty of younger drinkers, particularly women in what is a traditional backstreet pub.

3 cask ales were being served - Kirkstall Bitter, Trig Scarth & Duration Big Love. Ciders were Parrett Single Variety Red Worthy, Seacider White Peach, Rawlin's Sweet & Oliver's Fine Perry. Craft beers were Two Flints Santiago, Pilot Peach Melba Sour & Pressure Drop King Queen Knave & Pale Fire.

Two halves of the Scarth and a half of cider set me back £10.20, with the barman refunding me £1.50 after originally charging £11.70. So, it's not cheap but both my Scarth and my Parrett cider were enjoyable.

I'm really glad this pub survived the threat of closure. It's certainly up there amongst London's best pubs, in my view.

I remembered having been here before when I came here on a Pubs Galore crawl in Spring 2017 (see below for other crawlers' accounts - two-thirds of the way through a crawl I wasn't going to be writing a review). My brother and his then partner (now wife) brought me here one time when I visited them in Graham Road, half a mile away, in about 1980. My return here now found what I guess would be a new team behind the bar (since 2017, I mean - obviously), as they all looked to be in their early 20s, and the surprising thing was that four of them were on duty at 4:30pm on a weekday, when the pub was far from busy. They were mostly standing around making "I'm drinking a coffee, it's not my turn" gestures towards their colleagues as I approached the bar. The one who drew the short straw poured me a half of Gun Chummy Buster 4%, a dark and malty Sussex bitter, which was pretty good, though not exceptional. There were two other beers and a cider among the five hand pumps. The pub was originally at least four rooms and possibly a lobby, judging by the RSJs and the four visible fireplaces and bare-brick chimney breasts. I'd have quite liked it here, with its personal nostalgia, reasonable beer and pleasant surroundings, but the customer service nerd in me was annoyed by the sight four employees (or co-owners, who knows?) standing around chatting, or exchanging crossword clues and quiz questions. Some of my money was going in their pockets, but they weren't doing much to earn it.
