This former Whitbread’s house dates from around 1841 and in its previous guise, was a rather gaudy place called LMNT II. The previous name reinstated in 2018, this certainly isn’t a 19th century boozer by any standard.
Stopped at the entrance by very friendly front of house – I don’t think you can just walk in – I was told that I could have a drink without actually ordering food, the only option being Meteor from Alsace, costing £6.00, delivered to my table by a friendly waiter who furnished me with a cocktail menu prior to me placing my order.
The interior seems to lack any reference to the original pub, with walls that are a shade of mid-grey, the upper quarter being white, like the ceiling. The floor is bare boarded, with a faded painted geometric pattern. The bar is on the left on entering, but it’s very much the type of bar expected in a cocktail bar and I doubt drinking at it would be encouraged. Tables are modern with single central columns and chairs are conventional; an upholstered banquette is to the rear. Décor comprises a few framed prints and lighting comes largely from small glowing glass spheres hanging from the ceiling by long flexes, augmented with candles on tables.
Customers were young and stylish – compared to me – and all were eating.
The kitchen here closes at 9.00 pm, with drinking continuing until 11.00, but it would be unfair to give this place a rating because it really isn’t a pub anymore; I’ll leave that task to the restaurant critics.
