With the name Pied Bull in mosaic to the entrance of the former billiard room (see photos), this pub dates from at least the mid-18th century, possibly a fair bit earlier, but was undoubtedly rebuilt in this rather grand style at the end of the 19th century; some Young & Co’s tiling still persists, probably dating from the ‘20s or ‘30s.
Substantial inside, the pub has been seriously mauled by Young’s, probably when the name was pointlessly truncated to the Bull in 2015. Yes, there’s an attractive entrance vestibule with stained glass, more stained glass to a lantern above the former billiard room then some lovely etched and cut-glass panels behind the bar. Thereafter, it’s mullered: patterned tiling or bare boarded, some bare brick, threequarters height wood panelling to the rear dining area (possibly original), walls either blue rag washed or bare brick, lots of trendy light fittings and mixed furniture. Customers were professional locals, most seemed to be eating but none in the dining area.
There was London Original and Special, but the cask I would have drunk – Twickenham Grandstand – was ‘Coming Soon’. On a Saturday. At 9.45pm. So it was more Neck Oil, my half arriving in a pint glass in exchange for £7.55, courtesy of a deaf barman.
This is about par for the course for Young’s and better than their Manor Arms up the road; this is a very poor postcode for pubs, the Railway being the one to beat.

Rated: 4.5.

Seem to be hitting South London pubs that have not been reviewed for a decade or more this evening! In this case a large Young’s pub on the edges of Streatham Common. This venue seems largely unchanged from previous reviews in spite of the time gap. It was hard to discern an obvious demographic for presence (physical rather than spiritual) this evening. Think as a male I was actually in the minority, which was fantastic to see in what I would regard as a traditional pub. L

Given the Young’s ownership, totally typical quaffs here. At least they seemed to have the full range of their pub offering. Keg choices typical for venue also. I had a pint of Original, well kept and well enjoyed by me as we drifted into the mellow part of the late evening.

Have to admit I am enjoying quaffing in the South London postcodes. Venues enjoyable compared to bulk of recent experience in Central London. Will shift focus to SW rather than SE over coming months as I exhaust venues on this site over that time in SE. This venue was a middle of the road 5 for me although it was a very nice venue this time of the year.

This pub retains three separate rooms, unusual in itself these days, especially for a member of the Young's stable. The largest room has had a bit of the usual treatment with modern stripy wallpaper and carpets and the usual mix of seating, however perservere and wander through to the area behind where we have the original billiard room and bar. The room at the back has three pool tables but I suspect this isn't the original games room as the ornate skylight is situated in the area to the front where I guess the bar has been extended; this area has some attractive carved dark wood and etched glass. The pool room itself is decorated with various framed portraits of dukes and other dignitaries, there are also a range of trophies on a shelf, I assume for pool. Some good quality wood panelling survives too. Mostly regular seating, the former billiards room has exposed wood roof trusses.
Youngs beers, the routine ordinary Bitter and Special plus Jersey brewed Liberation Ale guesting. Thatchers cider on too.
A decent pub, catering for all tastes it seems, let's hope it can be kept that way.
