Referring to itself as a ‘Bar and Brasserie’ (ho-bloody-ho) and named after neighbouring Furzedown – where Sadiq Khan lives – the former Streatham Park Tavern is a brewers’ Tudor lump dating from the mid-19th century, possibly rebuilt in the aforementioned style; the exterior displays sports’ bunting and meal deals, looking every bit as downmarket as the road junction it occupies.
With no sign of any original pub, the interior has been savagely made over to try and create an upmarket ambience; it fails. There are broadly seven styled zoned areas, the rear decked out as a dining area – with aquarium, so perhaps it’s a fish restaurant – titmouse blue and white colour scheme, fake Victorian-style fittings, games machine, mixed zoned furniture with some tall bucket stools with tubular legs, beneath which is a mixed wood and Minton-style tiled floor. There were at least two TVs showing Lee Mack fronting in silence something that wasn’t Not Going Out; ferns dangled from lights. Young customers amounted to only around seven – making this large pub look empty – at the time of my Saturday 8.30pm visit, with no one in the dining area.
There’s still no cask, a half of Neck Oil setting me back a horrific £4.95, served by a sheepish barmaid who looked even more so – embarrassed even – when I queried the price; for the record, the far more upmarket local Young’s pubs – Manor Arms and Bull – charge £3.80 for the same.
This is a tragic pub; the absurd pricing is the nail in the coffin.

Just Doom Bar on in here (£1.65 a half, and in decidedly average condition), with a second handpump seemingly unused. Food seems to be available pretty much all the time, with main courses in the £9 - £11 range. Some pub grub favourites are on offer, such as the very traditional steak & kidney pie, at £8.95. I guess that’s the going rate for a London suburban pub.

This is a very large pub. As you enter into the main bar there is a room to the right with all tables laid for diners; on the left there’s a raised ballustraded area with half a dozen sofas; and at the back there’s another large room containing a pool table. There are one or two tall tables/tall stools around the place, but the majority of furnishings are normal tables and chairs. The floor has those wood surrounded square tiled patterns that I seem to find it difficult to describe.

This one is OK as pubs go without being anything special. But with the dearth of pubs down Mitcham Lane it’s a good job that this one’s still here. A better ale selection would be a big plus, especially as my Doom Bar wasn’t top notch.
