This pub has been open since at least 1891 when the licenced victualler was Thomas Masters; what association the Earls Ferrers had/has with the area I know not.
The place has been subject to a recent renovation from February 2026, having closed in November 2024; certainly, the exterior with its gaudy turquoise paint scheme looks less upmarket than before (see photos).
With the plate glass entrance door doing the place no favours, internally, the place is modern bare boarded, white or turquoise paint then bare brick; in short, a bit predictable, less so the TV masquerading as an open fire. The ceiling features some weird lighting devices with ‘cocktail bar’ purple ambient lighting, the sort of thing young women like. The only heritage I could spy was some paint encrusted cornicing then a simple bar back with bevelled mirrors. Furniture is modern conventional and at the time of my Saturday 9.00pm visit, customers were few, young and mouthy.
Drinks amounted to a fizzocracy, with some pseudo craft, many taps covered with a pint glass to indicate their dormancy. Thereafter, there were two pumps, one unclipped (pint glass shielding the handle) then one for Pride, similarly ensnared, so it was a half of Guinness, £3.50, served by a barmaid who took nearly ten minutes to change the barrel; a few minutes after taking my seat she told me that they would stop serving at 10.00pm, which is a bit lame for a Saturday.
I found this place to be rather dispiriting, the more so both for not serving cask and the Saturday closing time; the Railway is the one to beat when in SW16.

Looks quite a large corner back street pub but is a surprisingly small one room bar with an alcove to the side.Busy with diners.Tired décor and looks like the pool table has gone.About 4 cask ales on inc Dartmoor -jail ale,Blonde Witch and Wandle.I tried a bottled beer from new London brewery Inkspot that was okay.

The Earl Ferrers is a small, welcoming backstreet pub easily reached from Streatham station and Common. The main bar has scrubbed floorboards and some nice wood panelling which extends to the smart servery area. The walls have been painted in pastel shades and covered in a mixture of old photos and arty pictures which brightens the place up a bit. The bar back is nicely laid out and has been well decorated with numerous pump clips from a select range of breweries. An upright piano is squeezed into a corner near the front door and acts as a home for various leaflets and flyers. To the right of the servery there is access to a second room which is dominated by a pool table which doesn’t really fit in there and is almost impossible to play on if anyone else is sat in the room. There is also a dartboard, a small fireplace and a large portrait of the eponymous Earl. A decent contemporary soundtrack was playing at a quiet enough volume during my stay. A few people had taken their drinks out to one of the cafe style tables set up on the pavement at the front of the pub which is as peaceful as a rear garden given the lack of traffic.
There are five hand pumps, but I was a bit disappointed to find just two in action upon my arrival, offering Sambrook’s Wandle and Pilgrim Weald Ale. I gave the Weald Ale a try and thought it was very well kept. The staff were a friendly bunch and seemed to know everyone who came in whilst I was there. Food is served with some dishes detailed on a blackboard near the door, but I didn’t sample any of it.
I liked the feel of this place and thought it was a nice get away from the bustle of Streatham, although my enjoyment was tempered by my disappointment on the ale selection front. That said, I’d be more than happy to make a return visit the next time I’m in the area.
