This was a quick one as after lingering at the Telegraph i was late for a curry meet on the bridge end of Putney High St! First visit here and initially surprised as to how quickly i was at the bar from walking in the front door - literally one stride away. So, you don't see much of the pub before deciding on what you want to drink. The interior layout is well described below and wanting to continue looking around whilst i necked my pint i ended up going out the back of the pub via the raised decking area out the left-hand rear of the venue down to the paved / concreated large rear beer "garden". Plenty of distractions, including the huts dotted around the perimeter which were popular amongst the members of a wake taking place in the venue. By this time the storm clouds were gathering so maybe they were just planning ahead for the rest of the evening.
Beerwise, a very standard Youngs pub offering with Original and Special on the three or four handpumps and Neck Oil, Inch's cider, Guinness and the lagers they offer that i have noted so many times i should know off by heart by now! My pint of Original was fine and a relatively good pint to drink rapidly. Wouldn't have fancied doing that if i had been forced to take the Special as in an earlier venue this evening!
This was an average pub for me. Might have grown on me with a longer than 10-minute stay or if i did, as i usually do, sit inside the pub as i found the rear beer garden pretty soulless. There's only so much Original you can drink in one day (without getting bored as it would be hard to imagine getting inebriated on it before you physically couldn't drink more).

With elements apparently still extant, this pub dates from around 1700 as a coaching inn, reportedly the haunt of dandy highwaymen, the current structure then as now a Young’s house by 1900, situated in a none too attractive area.
With Young's having spent cash on looking flash, the multi-area interior has been given a hefty contemporary makeover with seemingly no respect for heritage: modern boarded, dark grey or white paint with some Arts & Crafts-style wallpaper and white Anaglypta ceiling with conventional lounge-style furniture. The bar has a tiled apron, then diagonal shiny turquoise ceramic tiles to a modern bar back and ugly tubular steel gantry; eclectic prints constitute the décor, all to a Dire Straits soundtrack and omnipresent smell of fried food, consumed by a mix of young customers with kids in tow, or elderly singletons.
A dull cask choice amounted to just London Original and Special, my Gamma Ray an obscene £3.80 a half.
The preferred option in these parts is the Telegraph, this place in its current incarnation, with lacklustre cask choice failing to stand and deliver.

An old traditional pub, now very much upmarket but retaining a pubby feel with lots of old dark wood in evidence and four or five separate drinking areas. Five handpumps in all with two donning Youngs Bitter clips, Youngs special on another with Guests of Sambrooks Wandle and Wimbledon Copper Leaf taking up the remaining two, the latter being hideously priced at £4.95. Nice enough pub but one best left to any stray tourists.
