Dating from 1776 as a coaching inn, rebuilt in the early 19th century, Grade II-listed and on CAMRA’s list of pubs with historic interiors – this dating from the ‘30s – with *.
Beyond the bay windows with their bullseye glass, the interior accords with just the *, a herringbone parquet or flagstone floor (see photo), then three-quarter height panelling topped with trendy wallpaper; otherwise, it’s summed up well by Rex, seemingly little changed in nearly 12 years. The atmosphere at the time of my Saturday 9.10pm visit was quite raucous, the pub full to capacity though not rammed, punters either local professional types, ladz on the lagerz and yoofs, with their trademark cavapoo haircuts, some dyed ginger.
A Young’s pub, with the addition of Proper Job, £6.45 a pint and nice.
Although a bit hectic, this isn’t a bad pub, certainly better than the Pig & Whistle, Victoria and Plough - both of which require more effort to reach - and a lot better than the Ship, Jolly Gardeners and especially Tapestry.
