Like Tris , a few months before me I found the solitary handpump barren, of the 25 keg tops only about half were in use upon my arrival, these mostly consisting of Octoberfest beers, several more came online during my Saturday lunchtime visit so maybe Friday night was a busy one. It's a pub I'd call in on again as I suspect the keg lineup will be interesting despite the apparent absence of any cask.

This is a late 19th century backstreet pub, home to the Affinity Brewing Co, pride of place going to their Modern German Lager.
The interior is small, much space taken up by a pool table. The floor is rough boarded, the walls an attractive shade of bottle green with a white ceiling from which hang spun metal shades then décor in the form of much foreign brewing regalia. Furniture is mixed, graced with the buttocks of young, trendy and animated locals, none watching either of the silent TVs.
Now re-armed, it's clearly all-change since the last review, as like the nearby Crown & Anchor, there are 25 taps with a solitary pump, clip reversed, so I don’t know if cask is actually available – or if this is a placebo – but it wasn’t at 9.54pm the other Saturday, me making do with a half of Anspach & Hobday’s Wheat DDH at £3.00; it tasted ok. Unlike the C & A though, there’s a beer wall with pump clips set back from the bar, making them all but impossible to read.
This isn’t a bad place, but the lack of cask is a deterrent, likewise the televised sport; when’s Andy Murray going to retire?

The ales on here had something of a Cornish emphasis, with Sharp’s Doom Bar, and St Austell Tribute and Proper Job available. Old Rosie cider was also available on handpump. I didn’t see any sign of food or menus when I was in here on Wednesday evening.

Live music is advertised - The Varukers had their own poster, possibly because they are appearing soon. The pub still consists of two rooms, joined by a doorway. The room on the right is signed as the Public Bar, and contains the pool table. It also has a table with books, presumably for customers to read. The highlight of the book collection (according to a railway enthusiast whom I was with) was a book of carriage, or perhaps engine numbers. The trainspotter’s bible I suppose. Other points of interest are the thick deep red velvet curtains, and the old bar gantry still retaining the Charrington’s signage. The handpumps are all in the Saloon Bar, but there is a small chalkboard in the Public Bar listing the available beers.

This looks like a backstreet locals’ bar. But it doesn’t open weekday lunchtimes so must be relying on the evening crowd. This is another pub under threat, so I’m glad to have visited it while I could.
