Formerly the British Flag, this pub was rebuilt for Watney's in 1938 by Culpin & Son, the result of road widening; must've been pretty narrow by 1930s' standards to require the 'widening' of a backstreet.
It’s a very basic place, recently repainted inside and out, the interior quite white and bright with a modern boarded floor, woody, simple furniture, TV, pool and darts; there's complimentary goose fat roasties with gravy on certain nights. Customers were locals and none in particularly high spirits at the time of my Friday late evening visit.
A fizz array as mentioned below, which I really couldn’t face.
I rarely comment on others’ reviews, but the pub clearly has its fans on the one hand, but on the other, it’s not-on to criticise other reviewer’s opinions.

Should have rated this place as a 9 to bring it back to a fair reflection of what the venue is. Instead fair reflection, on a stand alone basis, is a 5 from me. Anyone who thinks a place like this is a 1 has grossly mistaken what the venue is likely to be and so it should never be such a personal disappointment. Right, rant over, this is an L shaped pub with bar taking out the top left hand corner of the rectangle. Entrance on the front and right hand sides with a very keenly used pool table on the left hand side and an unused dartboard on the top of the right hand side of the pub. Definitely the busiest of my venues so far this afternoon / evening. There is a large TV showing Sky Sports in the corner and lots of photos of presumably regulars dotted around the walls around the bar.
Only keg and mostly lagers (Carlsberg, K1664, San Miguel, Stella, Fosters) plus Guinness, a couple of ciders and Maltsmiths (when the hell was the last time I saw that in a pub). What else would you expect and have here other than a pint of John Smiths.
In most respects the most authentic of the venues I have visited today. I enjoyed seeing the (most) famous George Best quote with a piccy behind the bar re spending money on fast cars, booze and women and squandering the rest. Spent most time here drinking my beer (OK not just because it was a JS) but probably because i enjoyed the place more than the places that were more highly rated (marginally) because they had some cask options.
