The Rose of Denmark as was, dates from the very end of the 19th century, an old Watney’s roundel still affixed to the sign bracket, located in a very hard to find location in the backstreets of Barnes, hysterically described on the pub’s website as being in a fictional area known as ‘Little Chelsea’; what a load of twaddle.
The interior is small, with the right-hand side dedicated to dining-only, the left-hand side small, the whole with a bare boarded floor, white walls, ceiling and wainscoting and scrubbed tables. With just a few prints, it’s a bit stark but there was a good atmosphere with many middle-class local customers in, many drinking wine at the time of my Thursday 9.15pm visit; as Strongers says, it’s more like a bistro than pub but not in an unpleasant way.
Aside from the prints, the only décor amounted to a few esoteric pump clips hinting at good things, but aside from an unused pump, all that was available was Newbarns Henok’s Mild, very nice and served by a friendly and beautiful barmaid. New to me, it was £3.30 a half but at least justified in part by its 5.3% ABV.
This isn’t a bad place – certainly better than the neighbouring Crossing – but it lacks pub atmosphere and the choice of just one cask was a little dispiriting.

Tucked away in the back streets ,this pub is tricky to find, and has gone gastro. The interior splits into a drinking area to the left of the entrance, while past an arch is the dining area. The decor is pleasing with traditional benches, settles, wooden tables and chairs and both sections were popular on my Saturday evening visit. The staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful, and there was a good mix of customers, creating a buzzy atmosphere.
I was in to eat and was impressed by restaurant quality food, not cheap but worth it.Lots of mains £14-£18 ,some more expensive dishes and starters and puddings avaraged £6,so you may end up at £30 per head after service charge.
There are two real ales,Sambrooks Wandle and Roosters Code Red ,a red rye IPA which went well with my pheasant. There is a locals vibe around the bar,but food service will dominate elsewhere yet as the pub name suggests ,its very dog friendly everywhere with bowls of water if your mutt doesn't fancy a pint.
I will certainly return, mainly for the food, but there is some real ale interest as well.

Has changed it's name from Rose of Denmark to The Brown Dog, and they do like dogs. The arch betwen the bar area and the dining area is covered with photographs of dogs, they also sell dog treats. Anyway back to the important things. It has two real ales, the only one I can remember is Sambrook's Wandle ale, but at £3.40 a pint it's a bit much seeing as it is only 3.8 strong. Serves lunch & dinner. Be careful as some of the chairs are a bit wobbly.
