It could well be fifteen years ago, the time of my previous review, that it was the last time I emerged from the nearby Northern Line tube station, one of the six London Underground stations on the current network map that are named after pubs. For those of you who may indulge in pub quizzes the other five are The Angel, Manor House, Royal Oak, Swiss Cottage and Maida Vale (the slight odd one out as the pub the area and subsequent tube station were named after was called the Hero of Maida, sadly demolished in 1992, but the tube station is still accepted as being named after a pub).
In the case of the Elephant and Castle area and tube station(s), it wasn’t this pub they were named after, as this is a 1966 office block build that took its name from the original Elephant and Castle pub that dated from 1760 and was demolished in 1959 to make way for the monstrous roundabout.
This is one of the Antic owned pubs that was transferred to the Urban Pub Co. last year and has undergone a make over that has removed all the Antic shabbiness and left us with quite a smart pub with impressive chandeliers that gives it more of a feeling of a nightclub, especially as it seems to have a regular 2am music licence.
Unfortunately on a warm summers lunchtime when the few people in were all in the, still impressive, outside space, it doesn’t really work. I’m sure on a late licence night with a DJ in situ and a decent crowd in, it works very well. But as a pub for a lunchtime pint and some nosebag it didn’t really work for me and I didn’t linger long, especially as the ale hand pumps seem to have been downgraded for chrome keg taps during the refurb.

To correct the review added last night: there is no pub called the Maida Vale, but there is a former pub called the Hero of Maida; close but no cigar: get your facts right.

Originally located on the roundabout at the heart of the legendary Elephant & Castle gyratory system, this pub dates from the mid-18th century and is one of five pubs which give their names to both tube stations and the surrounding area, with this ugly carbuncle dating from 1966 in what is probably the most unattractive location in all of Europe, though with all the ongoing development it’s actually less unattractive than it used to be, hard though that may be to imagine; at least Hannibal House, the shopping centre and – I kid you not – a statue of a pink elephant wearing a castle have gone.
This is an Antic pub, suitably Anticfied with exposed services, waffle ceiling and plumbing; behold the grey plastic soil pipes on high! Otherwise, a photo from July 2017 paints a tableau of the interior as do pics on the website, with a slightly raised area, red upholstered booth-style seating, marble clad columns though oddly there are some traditional knickknacks to a shelf at right. A DJ was spinning his digital discs on my Saturday night visit and loudly enough to trigger the 80dB noise alert on my Apple Watch. I was virtually the only customer inside, with the largely studenty crowd outside under an awning, rendering the prowling bouncer somewhat otiose.
Amazingly there was a selection of cask here and a decent one too with two from Volden: Pale and Session at an agreeable £1.90 a half and on very good form, served by a friendly barmaid.
Obviously, I’ve no intention of coming here again, but I preferred it to the neighbouring Rockingham.
