The Crown Hotel dates from the 16th century as a coaching inn, is operated by Sheppard Neame, which subjected the place to a makeover earlier this year, so I suspect the interior description now no longer matches earlier reviews.
It’s now modern boarded, a blue-grey colour scheme, an interesting copper panelled ceiling, conventional furniture, upright piano for singalongs and masses of eclectic framed prints with some artily placed knickknacks by way of added affectation. The bar area seems new, with some steampunk-style brass and copper piping. Customers were affluent locals, mixed in age including a baby in pram at gone 9.00pm.
There’s the usual five-pump Neame selection, including one of their experimental ‘Cask Club’ offerings: Rumour Mill; I demurred, playing it safe with yet more Neck Oil, £3.55 a half, served by a friendly barmaid.
This isn’t a bad pub, but the slightly contrived interior, like the brewer, isn’t great; the Hare & Billet is next door.

Being a Shepherd Neame pub there are no surprises regarding the beer, with Spitfire, Whitstable Bay and Masterbrew on. I didn't see a menu, but this is the sort of place that must do food.

As others have said, it's now completely opened up and completely modernised. This is the sort of pub that seems to be trying to look like a restaurant as much as a pub. As we passed through the main room at the front I noticed that modern decorative feature - a neatly arranged floor to celing display of logs next to the fireplace on the left. But the room at the back was quite comfortable, with normal tables and chairs, no TVs, a bookcase and some sporting memorabilia on the walls. There was a good amount of outside seating in a roped off area at the front of the pub.

This is not the sort of pub that stands out, but the beer was OK, and it was comfortable enough sitting in the room at the back. It's nothing special, but I quite enjoyed my brief visit to this pub.

A suitably aged building but the glass doors are the first indication that the interior has been totally modernised. Nothing like a traditional pub, although all the elements are here. Not especially unpleasant, but no real character at all. There is a separate wine bar signposted upstairs, available for hire but not open at time of visit. Beers are from Shepherd Neame, although I can't think of many of their pubs where asking for a Spitfire would result in the question "bitter or lager". Pretty stupid and inappropriate reuse of the name anyway, but I digress. The bitter was actually in tolerable but not great condition, so perhaps that was why. Will not be rushing back.
