This is a mid-19th century pub, empty Taylor Walker sign frames and denuded lanterns still evident, situated deep in the backstreets of north-east Camberwell. It’s a bit scruffy and the presence of partial security bars to the entrance aren’t that welcoming. Unattractive too are the gaudy flyers to the outside walls, advertising meal deals and the like, the sort of thing I’d expect to see on a Hungry Horse.
With no entries to their Facebook page since 2021, I’m not sure when the last reviewer turfed up, but at the time of my Friday 9.15pm arrival, I was met with a brightly lit pub – which I decided not to enter – filled with smartly dressed Africans, a women in traditional dress with a microphone seemingly delivering some sort of sermon, putative parishioners’ heads partially bowed as if in prayer, or out of sheer boredom.
I doubt that this pub’s intention was to rent it out as a place of worship on what must be the busiest day of the week, but equally I don’t feel confident to mark it as closed.

Finally got to this venue to complete the collection of SE5 pubs! Was a bit different to what I expected but was very homely and welcoming on a quiet night. Only Camden Pale Ale, John Smiths and Fosters on tap plus a couple of Strongbow’s. Little marks on the beer front but a very pleasant pub experience in terms of being welcomed and appreciated as a customer.
