After a devastating fire in 1980,the station ticket hall was completely rebuilt as a pub, initially part of the Bruce chain as the Phoenix & Firkin, home brew on site , a pint of their stongest Dogbolter you never knew which way it would go after consumption.I used it a lot in the early 80's.
After several changes of hand it's now a decent pub with food options and the basic layout unchanged,to the right an area of high tables, two Sky flatscreens and refectory seating with metal stairs to a mezzanine level, while to the left a calmer area with low backed seating booth, and dining style tables. The windows are impressively large and give natural light. All the walls have exposed brickwork,a mural of a phoenix rising from the ashes at the far left and a high vaulted ceiling in dark wood.
The bar was sporting three handpumps but all clipped with St Austell Proper Job (decent,NBSS 3.5,£6.15 ) and there is a 10 % discount for any NHS employee spending £20,Kings is just over the road. The food menu had a median main £17,with daily specials ,and lunchtime sandwiches, chips and a drink for £13.50 which looked value for money.
Smaller inside than it seems from the exterior,a decent stop for a pint after arriving or departing by train.Popular with medical staff.

The Phoenix is a large multi-level space that was formerly the ticket hall of Denmark Hill Station, and later a Firkin pub. Darkish lamplit décor, an upstairs area with comfortable couches, the space dominated by a huge station clock. Beers on were Black Isle Goldfinch, Bru Stout, Proper Job (tried - this was pleasant) and Doom Bar. Entrance is flat and leads straight into the main bar area; to get to the station you need to go round the side. A good station pub.

Nice enough pub, huge clock hanging over your head. There are doors leading onto the station, but they have been sealed shut. Fancy fish & chips with pea puree rather than mushy peas, on the lunch menu at £11.75. A bit out of my price range. 4 real ale taps, though only 3 on. Portobello Bronze Star at £4.40, also Doombar & Speckled Hen.
