A mid-19th century pub renamed the Kilburn Arms in 2018, this is listed on CAMRA’s Heritage Inventory, being of Regional Importance.
The pub still subjects customers to Track and Trace which I studiously ignored. There are indeed some very elegant cut and etched glass screens along with a very ornate bar back with a moulded cornice punctuated by a few columns with Corinthian capitals, painted gold.
The floor is modern boarded and walls are sea green to the dado, white on up then a pale grey Anaglypta ceiling. Some lighting is modern with lamps resembling armillary spheres. Furniture is conventional to the main floor with more ‘clubby’ upholstered booth-style seating partitioned by the aforementioned screens. There’s little décor that I could see, just a few prints and a dressed shop mannequin presiding over a selection of board games, which looked a bit naff. Tables have little glass vases on them, each containing a small blossom. Somewhat incongruously, Run DMC’s Hard Times wafted over the gramophone – what the Dickens? Customers were obviously locals and just six in this large space, making for little ambience.
There were two pumps without clips, then just Eurofizz, Lagunitas or Neck Oil at the utterly insulting £6.40 and served in a glass covered with little red, blue and yellow dots; it looked like something a small child would use.
This pub may have been very fine in its day, though I suspect it’s lost much of its grandeur. However, it’s the obscene prices charged in the Kilburn Arms that would ensure I wouldn’t come here again.
