A fairly attractive two roomed pub of a traditional nature, the bar has a side on horseshoe shape so able to serve both front and rear rooms. Four handpulls in the front room but two were being used as kitchen roll holders, one had a turned Harveys Sussex Best pump clip leaving a solitary Timothy Taylor Landlord available, with reports the previous week of no ales on , I wonder if cask is on the slide in here, the keg was mostly standard fayre with a couple of pretend craft in Neck Oil and Adnams Mosaic.
A pleasant looking pub but the overall experience was not so much.

Externally attractive, this street corner pub sits well with the villas of Canonbury and is quite close to Essex Road station. The New River runs besides the road to one side of the pub.
The front bar is quite modest, with traditional furniture and an upright piano.Quiz nights are advertised , it has a local community feel, and a friendly welcome from the barmaid. The flooring is bare boards throughout and the back room has it's own servery. There is some decent etched glass in a side window, more trad. furniture and original looking doors to the lavs and steps down to a beer garden in decking on various levels. It's all very charming.
Ale selection on my trip was Anspach & Hobday Golden Beer,Adnams Ghost Ship (care taken with first pint of the day, drawn through properly, branded glass and NBSS 4.5 so worth the £5.05) with a Bath Gem clip reversed.Kegs were very standard.
Given the ale quality ,decent soundtrack and friendly atmosphere this is a pub well worth visiting ,I will be back.

Situated in lovely Canonbury, overlooking the remainder of the New River and completed in 1613 by Sir Hugh Myddleton after whom this pub is named. This Grade II-listed ex-Courage pub was given a sympathetic makeover a couple of years ago. It's bare boarded with mixed furniture and muted music. One TV was spotted but was off. The colour scheme is contemporary and a model aircraft hangs from the ceiling. There's an upright piano and a small room to the rear with a working fireplace making a welcome addition on a chilly evening. There's a decent beer garden to the rear too with a little snug area, resembling a sauna.
Friendly staff, serving Mighty Oak Brewing's Kings at £2.10 a half. Also on offer were Adnams Ghost Ship (£4.00 a pint) and two other pumps, not recorded.
Definitely worth a visit if in N1 and is one of the borough's best pubs, especially when combined with the pleasant walk taking in the Island Queen en route to the Charles Lamb. Normal opening times now employed, the *at least* 11.00 pm licence on Sunday extending to midnight or beyond are a bonus.
