Cask was a single hand pump dispensing TT LL with the two hand pumps non dispensing. Keg offering of Pilsner Urquell, Brixton Low Voltage Session IPA, Lucky Saint, Peroni, Campfire Hazy IPA from Two Tribes, Guinness, Asahi, Neck Oil, Amstel and Cornish Orchards cider.
There is an outside paved seating area at the side of the venue, occupied by a few on an end sunny afternoon with little daylight remaining. Inside there is an island bar with service on three sides with a patterned tile skirt in an otherwise bare boarded venue. Think the venue was closed for a while recently for a refurbishment. Seating is around the perimeter, tall copper topped tables in the front window to the left of the entrance, a mid-brown studded leather banquette in the front left-hand corner, then some small round tables with regular chairs in the rear left-hand corner near a working fire grate, with a padded bench along the rear wall. Seating along the right-hand wall was via a similar banquette but in a sage green serving regular tables. The venue opens into a longer room with a big sky light beyond the bar area. Tables were laid for diners and there was a roaring fire in the grate on the wall at the back. No screens in sight, plenty of oils of presumably the Admiral himself on the walls and a jazzy soundtrack playing on my visit. Nice venue but was v disappointed by the beer choices.

A Butcombe tied house now known as The Cod,the side entrance is by the outside seating area in a light wood finish. The interior is dominated by an island bar with some high tables to the left, bench seating in light brown leather to the right while through an arch is a rear section with another long bench.Sports screens were showing the Olympics on mute ,while to the left side is a laid for service dining area with a portrait of the Admiral at the far end.
It's all a bit featureless, functional yet dull.Three handpumps with Butcombe Original doubled (NBSS 2.5) and their Rare Breeds with a partially turned clip but not dispensing after my enquiry so why not fully reverse the clip ? The keg selection was uninspiring and there were bottled beers from Butcombe on the beer menu.
I could not stand drinking the Original for a prolonged session given it's classic boring brown beer characterstic,so this was a brief stop which I am unlikely to repeat.

Known locally as the Admiral Cod, the pub’s history is well documented on CAMRA’s site. I came here once before around 1987 to do a three-hole mini crawl, which comprised the triumvirate of this pub, the even worse Shuckburgh (now closed) and Australian, which was actually one of the best pubs in SW3, but has now too sadly closed.
Earlier reviews paint of a picture of this being an upmarket pub and indeed their website describing it as ‘Chelsea’s boutique restaurant & bar’, the gallery page simply showing plates of food and what must be the upstairs dining room. I remember it being a bit ho-hum in the ‘80s, but I wouldn’t say there’s anything upmarket about it; in fact, it looks a bit down-at-heel, something of a surprise given the area. The interior appears to have a scruffy dark grey vinyl floor, dark brown matchboard partitions with matching wainscoting to dado height, above which is patterned wallpaper (see photo). Furniture is traditional, with very dated studded velour banquettes to the periphery though the bar structure looks suitably traditional, with a balustraded gantry. Lighting came by way of downlighters, then wrought iron Victorian-style chandeliers, the whole lot being unsettlingly bright; music played, but it was too loud for comfort. Décor comprised traditional framed prints along with empty bottles and pot plants on windowsills; again, all very dated, like drinking in pub c. 1955.
Far from being the wealthy in-crowd, customers were young and studenty, about half braving the chill for a fag on the scruffy covered side patio. What really endeared me [Not] to the pub, was the member of staff who on cleaning the table next to me, gave me a Mr Sheen facial from his sanitiser gun.
The ale choice amounted to two unused pumps, a reversed Deuchers clip, me opting for the keg Brixton Pale at £3.60 a half and dull, served by a perfunctory barman.
This isn’t a great pub even in a postcode not renowned for great pubs, at least not since the ‘80s, though it’s about as genuine a pub experience as you can expect in this postcode. I doubt I’d bother coming here again; if you want two endurable pubs in SW3, your best bets are the Surprise or Phoenix.
