Not much change inside since its Hobgoblin days – pleasant in a fairly traditional alehouse style. We decamped to the rear patio garden with TVs showing the tennis. Unfortunately what could and should have been a positive visit was spoilt at the bar where of the four ales (Trooper, Tribute, Bass and Doom Bar) one ran out and one had to be taken back as undrinkable (“I’ll bring out your replacement!” said the initially helpful barman, who then proceeded to not do so and I had to persuade another barman 10 minutes later that I was owed a pint, a middling Doom Bar in the end). Better cellaring and bar care would make this Wycombe’s best traditional boozer in the town centre but looks to be falling way short on this showing. 5.5
March 2012 (as Hobgoblin)
Previously known as the Three Tuns, this pub retains a chunk of the imposed Hobgoblin branding both inside and out. We gave this a go as a crawl joker for a quick half and ended staying there for more. The interior has a small room at the front facing the shopping street with a corridor to the right which leads to a larger seating area down a step, which housed a large screen showing the Six Nations. Plenty of wood and stone fittings give it a bit of character and it feels like there’s been a fairly hefty deep-clean taken place recently. Five ales were available (Rebellion Mild and Mutiny, St Austell Tribute, Theakston and Brains Rev’d James) alongside Westons Old Rosie. The Mild and Tribute were excellent, the Rev James fair. Staff left a little to be desired and were too busy farting around with some gadgets behind the bar to notice customers that weren’t waving a tenner directly underneath their snouts. Apart from that, I’d say this was a winner and worth seeking out for the beer. I’d be happy to return. Rated 7
