Disappointing cask offering of just Pride and HSB but the clip for ESB was turned around. The keg offering ordinarily would be Brixton Reliance Pale Ale, Asahi, Frontier, Gamma Ray, Cornish Orchards cider and Guinness. Not all were available as they were running things down ahead of a 3-week closure for refurbishment.

This is an old Thameside venue that I recall visiting about 24 years ago after attending a day's play in the Kramnik v Kasparov chess game played in the nearby Riverside studios. Don't recall seeing either of the cerebral protagonists decompressing over a few pints in the venue after their exertions that day. The entrance is off a v narrow passageway and the bar counter to the right and in front immediately faces you with the rather narrow quaffing options. The venue is bare boarded, low ceilings and offers a small number of seating options at the entrance area, but it does have a nice fire. The small round tables here were copper topped. The area behind the bar including the tables on the area overlooking the Thames were similarly small and self-contained. All told very quant but not one of the London highlights that combines quality of unrivalled location and venue experience with beer options. Maybe in another 24 years but will leave this one to the tourists.

After a far from pleasant experience in the nearby Blue Anchor, eight of us decamped here and managed to squeeze into the front snug bar, or what the pub advertised outside as the smallest public bar in the world, and for the next hour treated it as our own private function room. The strange bar layout means that the four available ale pumps are actually on the section in the snug so no problem for us seeing what was on and we stayed on the Pride and the Olivers Island, both of which were on good form.
Yes, it is very touristy, and most people who visit are tourists or people dining, but good to find it still one of the best pubs on this section of the tow path for a pint.

It was busy here on Saturday afternoon and it soon got busier as a fancy dress pub crawl arrived at about the same time as we did. After getting our drinks we went outside to enjoy the view over the Thames. I was stood under the curving, open staircase that leads to the upper level when I was hit on the head by the business end of a vacuum cleaner carried by one of the fancy dressers on his way upstairs - I didn't see what the rest of his costume was, or why he needed to carry an old stand-up vacuum cleaner around with him.

Anyway, it's a pleasure to be able to report that after all that, we had a very pleasant time here at the Dove and the London Pride was in fantastic condition. In fact, if I'd known the result of our game at Loftus Road in advance, I'd have stayed here instead. Is that NBSS 4.5?
