Enjoyable visit - right on the banks of the River Chess - so the walk from Ricksmanworth delivered me to the door.

Really nice courtyard full of a pre-wedding party.

Inside was quiet - plenty of tables, all with menus, but still had that low ceiling classic pub feel. The food - mainly Thai - looked exceptional. It was lunch, so I made do with a Tuna Sandwich which was great value.

As a Fullers tied house, I expected the beer to be good - but I would say this is one of the best ESBs I've ever had.

The Queens Head is a nice looking red brick traditional pub and restaurant situated in the old part of Chesham town. Its location on the junction of Church Street and Wey Lane makes it about a 10 minute stroll equidistant from either Chesham Metropolitan Underground station or the Chesham United football ground if you are in town for that reason.
The local Mid Chilterns CAMRA branch has just made it their runner up for Pub of the Year 2014, an award they have won a couple of times. And although usually coming second is no great award, to be considered second behind the excellent Rising Sun in Berkhamsted is not shabby at all.
First licensed as a pub in 1759, many of the pubs original internal features have remained intact including some glass door panels, the original half-timbered walls and two excellent cast iron open fireplaces. Although now all connected there are several distinct areas internally around the main central square bar and a lot of historical framed photo’s and posters give the pub a lot of character, especially as it still retains a small carpeted snug room off the main bar area.
The bar has a set of four handpumps on one of the sides and as this is a Fullers pub London Pride and ESB are always available along with usually one of their seasonals which was Wild River for my visit. And then Brakspear Bitter is a permanent ale on the fourth pump. Although this was my inaugural visit, the beer is reputed to always be good here and the pub was awarded the Fullers pub of the year for 2012.
The pub is also home to a Thai restaurant which is housed in the eves of the converted stable building on the other side of the pub courtyard, but Thai bar food and a range of standard pub sandwiches are also available in the main pub.
There is a pleasant garden out back and one other interesting feature is that the River Chess flows past the entrance to the pub courtyard and disappears under the corner of the public bar.
I can fully appreciate why this is an award winning pub and will certainly plan to return.

A great pub in Chesham old town. Two seperate bars with more seperate drinking areas. Secluded beer garden.Full range of Fuller's beers on with Brakspears bitter.Thai food.A classic pub.10 mins from Chesham station.
