Traditional looking dark pub but it's obviously been opened out from many small rooms, with the bar now keeping its back tight to the front wall (not traditional). Four hand pumps with Broadside, Tribute, Boltmaker - and Oakham Citra, of which I had a half that was in Very Good condition (£5.20/pint). I was joined by the rest of the pub research trip crew, aka the CAMRA South Herts Branch plus local guide James. Rather than sit there with dregs in my glass I went for a half of St Austell Tribute, which was in just the same condition, and at the same price, as my first half. This is a decent pub, but I do find these mainstream line ups a bit uninspiring.

Looks really good on approach through a well looked-after courtyard. A proper let-down inside which is a dark and drab modern affair with walls, bar and wood wainscoting suffocated into submission by two-tone battleship grey paint. Brighter at the bar at least where I saw Oakham Citra, Taylor's Boltmaker, Grainstore Ten Fifty and Tribute. The Citra, which I use as bellwether beer, was pretty good (NBSS 3.5) and served-up by a friendly barmaid, so well-worth the GBG entry on that score. But not somewhere to linger unless it’s a sunny day and there’s a courtyard seat. 6.5

A very well run pub, which is spotlessly clean. The manager has a good reputation locally for his quality cask ales, which is evident from his highly polished handpumps. Four ales on our visit serving Tribute, Oakham Citra, TT Boltmaker and Grainstore Ten Fifty. I found the interior to be rather clinical, plus an uninspiring grey and blue decor.
