This is a Bateman's pub with two hand pumps (see photo for beers on at the time of my visit). My pint of XB was £3.90 and went down a treat (NBSS 3.5 or 4) - mind you, I'd been cycling into a NE wind for two hours, and arrived 25 minutes before afternoon closing, so I'd probably have drunk almost anything and thought it the best beer in the world. After reading the review below I would have been interested in comparing this basic village local with the Coach & Horses on the main road, but that one isn't open on Wednesdays. Maybe next time.

As a contrast to the Coach & Horses which is a brewery tap and boasted 3 fairly unique beers and 2 equally unique ciders but yet can't get into the Good Beer Guide, the Ship Inn had Bateman's XB and 2 unclipped handpulls and naturally appears in the most recent Good Beer Guide. Sounds like a nice and fair selection process! Beavertown Neck Oil was available on keg, with the ciders being Inch's & Strongbow Dark Fruit.
The pub consists of a front bar and a smaller rear room, seemingly more for diners. The front bar has a large screen TV which was showing the Cheltenham Festival. Music was also playing, making it a bit of a din. This all in spite of their being just one other customer in the pub. There is a dartboard in the corner and quite a few trophies and shields dotted around both the front and rear rooms, suggesting the pub has some successful teams. The front room also had a fireplace with a wood burner.
Another couple were also having a drink in the small outdoor area to the rear and adjacent to the car park, but I failed to warm to this pub.
