In the wilderness between Aylesbury and Winslow and formerly named The Bell, this pub is now community-owned and has gone from strength to strength and had throng of good-natured local drinkers in on a Sunday afternoon. An island "green" opposite the pub with a handful of pub bench seats serves as an additional semi-beer garden and makes for a nice sunspot if the ball of gas 93 million miles away has its hat on. Entry is up a couple of steps into a main, bare boarded room: there's a boxy area to the left with an open, re-pointed conical brick fireplace and large table left for those eating, but a step up to the right sees a wood-fronted bar serving a bar area with a plethora of bar stools, a couple of small tables with chairs within two windows and a squarer coffee table by another open brick fireplace, hemmed in by blue upholstered Queen Anne-style lounge chairs. The ale selection is where it's at, with Chiltern Beechwood Bitter, XT 4 and one from the latter's Animal offshoot of one-offs named Octopus which was a hoppy beaut. A further pump offered Saxby's Original Cider and a wide range of BrewDog bottles were available from a fridge behind the bar. I really liked this one and the Animal's quality topped the experience off for me. High marks for this 'un.
