It was only a few moments after I entered here at the behest of the BiL did I recall it looking strangely familiar in terms of layout – yes, it’s the former Orange Tree. Now run by Wells (or the animated corpse thereof) this has taken on a café/crafty inclination with as much coffee as beer being served on a Wednesday evening. The usual rustic-esque stripped wood finish though there was a bit of interest in the old prints and bric-a-brac in the rear room. Four dead pumps, so some keg from Wells (branded as Brewpoint) it had to be – the Genesis stout was actually fairly decent. Not somewhere I’d see the need to re-do anytime soon but the place seemed to be ticking-over nicely with a selection of the more sophisticated Leicester types, so it’s a surprise to read the review below.

July 2006 (as Orange Tree)
Decent place for a last drink before closing, has a couple of ales on (Bass and Marstons tasted fine) and gets very full, mainly youngsters on en route to the city's clubs. Has a big beer garden out the back and is pretty spacious inside. Not bad. Rated 6

The Tree is a narrow pub, which stretches back into a smaller sub-divided room at the rear, with an outdoor area beyond that. There were 2 or handpulls on at the bar, with just one clipped. It was a Brewpoint Charlie Wells beer, but I don't recall whether it was Origin or DNA. I avoided this, instead going for the keg On Point from the same brewery.

Having looked for a local CAMRA magazine earlier in the day, I found quite a large pile here near to the entrance to the toilets. Somebody has obviously taken their time to drop a load off. But despite serving a real ale, it doesn't seem like the place that would attract many CAMRA types.

This was a fairly rough and ready place, which strangely was the only pub of the 3 next to one another on the High Street which hadn't employed bouncers.

We were soon ready to move on to Wygston's House, which was extremely busy. As such, a couple of our party (father and daughter) came back to the Tree, only to have a bloke threaten to chop their heads off. It seems like bouncers on the door could be a worthwhile exercise here, if only to filter out some of the riff-raff. This is not a pub I am likely to return to. I'll leave it to the local thugs.

Found pubs galore really helpful, so I have joined and here is my first review. Loved this pub and the great beer garden. Mixed ages, mainly young, but staff and customers friendly. Three real ales on, and this is where I will have to start taking notes. I remember it was a good pint, and that I had to have another. The food was good too.
