The Anchor Inn, Hinckley

Both this pub and the Cross Keys were the busiest of the Burbage pubs we visited yesterday and I felt that the Anchor was marginally the best the village had to offer.

As you enter, the bar is on the left-hand side, with different seating areas around. The flooring is bare boards and there was a wood burner keeping things warm to the front right-hand side. The pub has been decorated with a nautical theme, with pictures of boats on the walls, flags on the ceiling, barometers, ship's wheels and a propeller. A corridor to the rear right has maps on the walls and leads to the toilets, an undercover outdoor patio and a garden.

Dance music was playing throughout our visit, with disco lights flashing in one section where there was also a TV (switched off). This seemed at odds to the New Year's Eve clientele, but was more perhaps for the benefit of the young barmaids.

At the bar, there were 3 real ales - Timothy Taylor Landlord, Sharp's Sea Fury & Black Sheep Best Bitter. Sharp's Atlantic & BrewDog Black Heart were the pick of the keg beers. The cider was Rekorderlig. Snowballs and mulled wine were being promoted. They do seem to like a snowball in these parts. Lists of football fixtures on the walls suggest that the TV often shows live football.

This pub had a bit more character than other Burbage pubs and had a much more lively atmosphere than other places in the village, which pushed it above average.
