The Millstone is a Thwaites pub with three handpumps in the bar, two of which were unused leaving Thwaites IPA as the lone cask option. Standard and premium keg is also available. There is an area to the right of the entrance with banquette seating and the bar to the left faces banquette seating under the front windows. Tables and chairs run up the left side of the pub, separated from the bar area by a large double sided chimney breast with burner. Televisions were showing BBC Sport when a Premier League match was on so there’s no Sky Sports. This place is OK, but I’m not sure it’s worth the walk out of town for a revisit.

Not too bad a pub and quite friendly. A Thwaites pub and therefore there are 2 Thwaites beers available on the 3 handpumps that are on the bar. Thwaites Original and Wainwright being your choices today. An open plan place with an L-shaped bar. A fairly traditional style pub and nice enough on this Friday afternoon visit.

This is a pub which presents itself as an unusual mix of traditional and modern. The layout is a single, wide yet shallow room with the servery in the mid section. The bar area is the more traditional space, with carpeted floors in two recessed areas opposite which provide some comfortable banquette seating. The bar back is nicely presented and it was notable that their decent wine range was well displayed here. The area to the right of the bar also has some banquettes, but this space was packed full of people watching the West Ham vs Man Utd fixture on the TV. The left side of the pub however, is strikingly different, with a wooden roofed conservatory style room with smart tables and chairs and another TV screen showing the same match. The large windows here gave the pub a strange impression when approaching from the North, but presumably in the daytime it is a nice bright space.
Just the two ales available – Thwaites Original and Wainwright – with the latter costing £2.75 and being on top form, although it was perhaps served a little too cold for my liking. The staff, like most of the staff encountered around town, were very friendly and there was a good crowd in early on a Saturday evening, creating a lively atmosphere.
I thought this was a decent local’s pub that was welcoming and served a good pint of beer. I much preferred this pub to the nearby Bowling Green, and it seems that the local’s do as well. This is worth the walk out of town for in order to enjoy a quick pint or two.
