The Finchampstead area is a bit of a mess at the moment, with roadworks and road closures almost everywhere. You approach the Queen's Oak along a lane and luckily, signs at the start of the lane state that despite a road closure, the Queen's Oak is still open.
On arrival, the car park was closed off due to the works. Although peculiarly, there were several cars parked on there. Instead we parked on the village green where the Jubilee Oak tree was planted to celebrate Queen Victoria's Jubilee and from where the pub takes its name. The tree is now gone, but there are at least some other oaks to admire. Indeed, the setting for this pub is lovely and peaceful, despite the barriers closing a road.
Inside, there is a small snug off to the left as you enter, with a couple of other rooms to the right - a bar area and a dining area beyond. Bar staff looked a bit suspicious of us at first, but they were quite efficient with 3 of them getting involved in dispensing our drinks (there were only 2 of us). Brakspear Gravity & Banks's Amber Bitter were the cask ales.
A few others were in for lunch on our Wednesday visit, but the pub was otherwise fairly quiet.

My visit to this pub on a Wednesday lunchtime found it to be a little quiet with a couple of locals at the bar along with who I assumed was the manager/Landlord, you enter into the main bar area with a similar sized room knocked through to the right, there is a smaller seperate snug type room to the left.Very much a country pub, with a few black beams but not overly rustic. Beerwise four of the five handpumps were in operation ,the one not serving was clipped with something coming soon, the four on consisted of Breakspeare Bitter and Gold, along with Wychwood Hobgoblin and Jennings Cumberland which was surprisingly half decent.Despite the rather plain beer line up I found it to be a perfectly decent country pub.

A large Marstons outlet. Big main bar along the front, knocked-through and pretty characterless. A bit dated décor-wise, quarter length black painted wood panelling and artex style wall wattling (this will some day be considered heritage but hopefully long after I’ve passed on). Herringbone block flooring of some class, though the busted lightbulb brought things back down. Some of the punters looked like extras from Withnail & I. Jukey had been taken over by locals pumping out prog rock and most were happily on their way to oblivion. An odd bunch, we weren’t exactly made to feel welcome and my act of manners in holding open a door for a couple of ladies elicited not a grunt of thanks. Four ales on, Brakspear Oxford Gold (so-so), Brakspear Bitter, Marston Help For Heroes and Wychwood Hobgoblin. Berkshire’s answer to the Slaughtered Lamb.
