On a cycling route along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, we had decided on a quick stop here after eating our sandwiches a couple of miles earlier and needing something to wash them down. The pub seems from this side to consist of characterless modern extensions, with picnic benches occupying the grassy area. As we locked up our bikes near a tree I was a little worried about the loud music and what sounded like a public service announcement or radio programme coming from inside the pub. In fact, on closer inspection there are loudspeakers attached to the external walls too. There were four hand pumps on the bar, and someone was pulling jugs full of foaming beer from one of them, and throwing it away. This was JW Lees Bitter, so I opted for the same brewer's MPA, while my cycling companion went for a can of alcohol-free Guinness, which she enjoyed. My half of MPA, meanwhile, had a musty smell to it, and the same was apparent on the swallow, though the aftertaste was bitter and quite pleasant. I saw no point in complaining as the alternative was being poured away as we sat there in the gaudily furnished snug. If this pub is owned by the brewery, they need to be keeping an eye on the way their managers are treating their beers.

Now the only remaining pub in Haskayne, this canalside pub is run by JW Lees.
The bar is in front of you as you enter. Off to the left is one reasonable size room possibly used for dining and a small snug with a TV and some pictures of the local area. To the right, the pub is more open-plan and there were a few tables taken mainly with diners on my Sunday evening visit.
There are 4 handpulls on the bar. Lees MPA & Bitter are the 2 cask ales. The additional handpulls suggest there may be an occasional guest.
Despite lacking atmosphere, this looked like a nice pub in a pleasant location, but lacking anything exciting on the beer front.

A lovely canal side pub hidden down a quiet lane. Though traditional stylee it is food orientated. An excellent beer garden overlooking the canal. Real ale is available.
