A former coaching inn on the main road through this historic village, which still does B&B. It is run down, uninviting and dreary, currently operated by Relax Innz. The outside is poorly maintained, and it is sited in a less-then-lovely location next to a couple of kebab shops and hairdressers, with whom it shares overflowing bins and a pile of fag ends. There is a car park the other side. Inside, it isn’t much lovelier. There is a large bar at the front of the building, which is functional rather than comfortable. The battered carpet adds to the overall air of decay, while the apathy of the landlord does nothing to instil any welcome. The barman did try to be helpful – once he prised himself away from the gaming machine - but he was struggling against the tide. There is a separate games room with pool and darts, and a skittle alley. Three handpumps on the bar, two dry and one clipped Bath Gem, though what came out of it was anyone’s guess – if it were Gem, it had mutated. If stuck here in future I should follow the locals’ lead and go to the working men’s club a few yards away for a drink.
