A town centre coaching inn with its own motorcycle club. The building is interesting, a high street frontage and a large car park at the back entered through the original coach portal. The car park is steep and gravelled, and there is a clubhouse at the bottom. There is also a neat garden at the side, plus barbecue area. An outside bar and smoking shelter adjoin the main building, which from the back is entered either through the back door and up a narrow set of stairs, the side door next to the smoking shelter of the front door on the high street. Inside is a labyrinthine assortment of rooms and corridors, including a triangular sub-mezzanine with a pool table, a square dining room and 3 bar areas at the front, heated by a two-sided chimney breast created by knocking through. There are plenty of interesting architectural features including exposed timbers, fireplaces and odd flights of stairs. There are various gaming machines and a dartboard which complement the various bric-a-brac dotted around the walls and ceilings. The club, Waggoners MCC, has it headquarters here and holds regular functions. The landlord was welcoming enough, while most of the customers when we visited were elderly local residents. Only one ale on, Doombar, which was in fair condition. This would make a great place for a biker-friendly party or other fun gathering, and it’s a useful pit stop if passing, though the beer quality and range could be better.
