Whilst sitting here supping my insipid half of Green king IPA as it is served in here I looked around and wondered what the residents of Swanley had done in a previous life to warrant being made to live here. Their town is an absolute shit hole, their one remaining pub frankly isn’t much better , and the only other drinking option is a very small micro pub in a former public convenience that doesn’t open till 4.00pm. And yes the irony of the fact that the best place to drink beer in Swanley is a toilet wasn’t lost on me either.
As for this pub, it looks a bit like an estate pub from the outside and feels like one on the inside with TV screens in several sections, a pool table dominating one section , a dartboard in another and the only outside area is a small sterile concrete courtyard area out to the back with just a few benches where it seems compulsory to have a fag on the go if you want to use them.
There wasn’t many in on this lunchtime and those that were looked like rough lost souls. Even the young lad working the bar was one of the most disinterested barmen I have come across in a long while and gave a good impression of wanting to be anywhere else than here.
Well, I can’t blame him as I had the same feeling and for me, here meant the wider Swanley, not just this pub. Frankly, I was only here because after driving up from the south coast I was in need of a bio break before attempting the Blackwall Tunnel and was now rueing my decision to do the honourable thing and buy a drink instead of sneaking into the gents and then performing a Foxtrot Oscar.
I took a final look round at this pub and my fellow customers and concluded that the residents of Swanley must have done something absolutely terrible in a past life.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Lullingstone Castle

The only pub in Swanley town centre, but with the look an feel of a basic estate pub. Partly opened out inside to form an overall 'L'-shaped bar with several small seating areas and a pool room off to one side. Limited furniture and decor. Standard Greene King menu with food offers. Sports / music channel TVs. Just Abbot (£3.03) available from three handpumps. Not a place to linger...

The Lully (at one time called the Mulberry Bush) is now the only pub within Swanley town centre and many would argue that the town would still be better off without it. The pub has suffered from a poor reputation for many years although to be fair, few of Swanley’s pubs have ever covered themselves in any glory.

Like much of the town centre itself, the pub is a characterless modern building with an estate feel to it both inside and out. The interior is functional rather than cosy with an alcove of banquettes around a fireplace and a few tall tables in the main bar area. A raised area near the main door possibly doubles up for a music/karaoke stage (I didn’t notice anything advertised but it’s that kind of place) and the rear section is dominated by a pool table. A couple of TV’s were showing Premiership football although the place was populated by barely half a dozen people on a Saturday lunchtime.

The pub is part of the Greene King empire but despite 4 hand pumps, no ales were available despite being badged (not an unusual occurrence judging by other reports). I was offered a choice of bottled Old Speckled Hen or Abbot opting for the former at £3.20 which seemed reasonable enough price wise. Food was cheap and cheerful although there were no takers other than one of the barmaids.

I didn’t experience anything particularly intimidating and the staff were certainly friendly and efficient enough although reputations don’t get there by themselves and it’s not a place I would particularly choose to visit for any reason other than it’s a case of Hobson’s choice.
