Another quaint, quirky Sheppey pub, this Victorian high street boozer consists of a carpeted public bar at street level, which contains gaming machines and a lively collection of local clientele. To the right, up a flight of stairs, is a mezzanine floor with the open plan saloon bar, also carpeted, which has a dartboard. Down a level from there is a games room with a pool table, and the toilets. There are stained glass windows, 1970s Venetian blinds, 1980s fireplaces and a cacophony emanating from the hifi system. There was a warm welcome from the staff and a companionable apathy from the locals. Two ales on – I had Doombar which was in fair condition. A decent town pub, worth visiting if passing.

I visited the Queens Head early on Monday evening last week when there were ten or so locals in attendance. Half of these were involved in a game of cards that was being watched with interest by the bloke who was working the jump. Alongside the standard draught are a couple of hand pumps that were drawing Courage Best and Jennings Crag rat. The bar is flanked by a dartboard to the left and a raised seating area to the right where another dartboard can be found. I spied a few pool cues through the hatch behind the bar so I imagine that there is a table, but I didn’t investigate this back room. I didn’t spot any televisions or Sky Sports advertisements, but there was some background music playing off a jukebox.
This is a local’s boozer and although I wasn’t made to feel unwelcome I didn’t see anything that would have me rushing back.
