Very pleasant place to stop when out walking along the historic Pilgrims Way and other public rights of way at the foot of the North Downs east of Maidstone. Despite being very much a food-led pub, they do welcome thirsty ramblers (provided you take muddy boots off and leave them in the place provided by the door). Old Dairy Brown green-hopped ale (£5.00, but 'end of barrel' unfortunately) and other Kentish beers from Mad Cat, Canterbury Ales and Musket Brewery being poured from the four handpumps on this visit. Nice garden when the weather suits.

An 18th century country pub on Pilgrim's Way which may once have been a forge, it is now a traditional family-run freehouse. There is a large car park, although much of the grounds have been used to build chalet-style B& accommodation which makes it look like a motel. However, the inside remains unspoilt; the single large bar has various nooks and crannies, and there is an attractive inglenook fireplace. Draped with dried hops, free wifi and dog friendly. They also cater for group meals and regularly entertain groups from Medway and Maidstone. There were three ales on, and I tried them all: Long Man Best Bitter, Westerham God's Wallop and Hobgoblin were all in excellent condition. Well worth seeking out for a meal, a few beers or just a place to relax.

Read my review of the Hook and Hatchet and much the same applies to this establishment as I regularly frequented the Black Horse in my formative drinking years. In those days it was a small single-roomed bar run by convivial hosts Les and Marion. Today, although very different from then, it is a fine pub offering good food, well-kept ales and accomodation.
