Town centre music pub of some character, with a rather vivid colour scheme adorned with musical artwork and paraphernalia. Regular live music, although it is not obvious where they put it, as the none of the three connected areas are very large. A garden was signed at the rear but was not open. Two ales on: Doom Bar and Black Sheep Holy Grail. Not to everyone's taste but worthy as being totally different to anything nearby.

Originally The Three Compasses, this 17th Century town pub describes itself as a rock 'n' roll bar. It was previously known as West Bar and City One. Certainly the the rock music was present, both on the sound system and in the form of a set of vinyl records affixed to the wall alongside posters and other musicalia, including a 1950s jukebox. The 'roll' bit was represented by a bacon baguette I enjoyed, although it was probably the smallest baguette I'd ever seen, making it poor value for money. Other dishes, including a vegan burger called 'Devil Gate Drive', appeared better value. The interior has been opened out, timber floorboards restored and the whole given a very pseudo-Gothic black and red paint job. The main bar area is sparsely furnished, leaving plenty of room for vertical drinking. There is a smaller area dominated by a screen and projector, then a larger lounge area at the back. The staff were enthusiastic, pleasant and engaging, if a little weird. The pub hosts regular live music acts, though it must get a bit crowded as it's not that large. There was a range of rums on offer, but the best thing about this pub is its beer. Old Dairy Red Top and Kent Brewery's Black and Gold were in perfect condition, Doombar was also on offer alongside Old Rosie from a box behind the bar. I'd have to be in the right mood, but it's a good inclusion in a crawl due to its beer quality if you don't mind a bit of noise.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Lady Luck
Probably rather different in the evenings, but this music pub is pretty conventional during the day (albeit with a generally young customer base). Fairly plain furniture, and decor in the darker shades, but doing reasonable business with those eating in the early afternoon. Also has a decent little courtyard garden open during daylight hours. Three real ales on handpump: Doom Bar, Trigger from Musket Brewery (£3.70) and Long Man Long Blonde.
