The bare board floored Dolphin has an L-shaped bar with an old wooden serving counter that faces tables and chairs that run the width of the pub under the front windows. There’s more seating in a dimly lit area to the right of the bar where access is gained to the rear where a fireplace sits on the left wall and a couple of snugs with large tables sit either side of the rear door. Out the back is decking with covered seating and steps, and a slope, descend to four rows of picnic tables, it is larger out here than I thought it would be. Back in the bar, where the likes of Prince were playing in the background, is a premium keg range alongside three hand pumps, two of which were unused which left Cat Brewery’s 9th Life as the lone cask option. Standing in the empty pub not long after it had opened, I feared the first pint of the day from the pump, so I plumped for a pint of Peroni. I still struggle to get my head around how a pint of lager in a pub can be more expensive than a full English breakfast from a café a few doors away. The barman was new so needed help pouring, but the two staff on duty were friendly.

Attractive alehouse-style pub / restaurant, with main bar counter at the front and several small dining areas further back (and the patio beer garden beyond). Mix of furniture and decoration, but the blend seems to work quite well. Just Hophead available from the three handpumps on this first revisit for nine years, but this place still has a pleasant and convivial atmosphere.

Very quiet here just afternoon on a Saturday, or it would be quiet without the roadworks going on outside. This seems like a pleasant pub, though the beer offering is a little pedestrian: just Landlord when I arrived, but very soon that was taken off (end of barrel perhaps, though mine seemed clear and fine. NBSS 3.5 but over &£6/pint) and replaced by Hophead. The only other beers I saw poured were Guinness. Maybe it'll pick up after the road workers knock off for the day.
