Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Canterbury Tales
Located directly opposite the Marlowe Theatre so very much in the market for pre-performance and interval drinks. However, it has been refurbished in an upmarket semi-traditional style, so the clientele is wider than just that. Created from two adjoining buildings, the bar is in the centre of the main part, with the lounge (and log-burner) on the right-hand side and The Snug off to the right. Just Rebellion IPA from Marlow on the three handpumps on this midweek late evening visit while waiting for our train (with Canterbury West station not being that far away).

This was just a random Friday evening punt. It's not just smart, it's got pictures on the walls that would grace any gallery - obviously these are not originals: it's a pub. One of the bar staff pointed out the window of her flat in an 18th century engraving of the High Street. I pointed out that their cask beers were from Sussex and Yorkshire, and they were letting the side diwn by not featuring Kentish beers. She showed me the pump clip for their next brew on: from Rebellion in Berkshire. Point conceded. My half of Sussex Best was only just average, being cloudy and drowsy (NBSS 2, £5.45/pint) and the background music was dreadful. I've awarded this pub a 6 just for the art.

Previously The Mitre, the pub is now mainly a venue for theatre-goers to have a swift before, after or half-time theatre drink. The barman was friendly enough, but it lacked atmosphere and didn’t have a pub feel. No real ale, the only beers on offer were Neck Oil and Barney’s Lager. Probably not worth including in a crawl.
