Reopened late November after a brief but somewhat controversial period of closure. Now owned by a local family. It has seen changes over the years, and the historical Public Bar,(to the right of the bow window facing the street), is now laid up for dining, as are zones in the Saloon,(nearest the Church.) Drinkers and dogs are welcome.
On my mid week visit on a foul evening a few days after reopening the trade was largely local, and lager was to the fore. However the pint of Harvey's XXXX Sussex Old Ale was in superlative condition: indeed it was probably the best pint I've had in the fifty plus years I've known this house.
I've always said that The Chequers could be the leading pub in the area; a smashing old building with the spaces and facilities for both.dining and a wet trade, together with letting rooms in a highly attractive Kent village.

The signage proclaims it to be a "14th-century inn", and the traditional white weatherborded exterior certainly looks the part in Smarden's very attractive main street. The main rooms on the Church side of the bar are set aside for dining, and the handpumps there are disused. However, the smaller Charter Bar on the other side is the place for a pint with three real ales available: Doom Bar, Thwaites Original and Hancock's HB (£3.00). Two bench tables out front, but to the rear there is a decent beer garden beyond the car park. There is also a water feature deside a modern (but tastefully executed) extension to the main building.

Nice garden and pond. Food good, but a tad pricey.
The beer selection isn't what it once was, and the service is slow, to say the least.
