A rare outside of Ryde town centre pub, one of two in the Strand/Monkton Street area. This is a two roomed establishment with a subtle nautical theme. What would have been the public bar is tabled for food and is spoiled a little by wall mounted televisions and piped music, both unnecessarily on when I visited. I don't know why but piped music seems to have become the norm even in pubs where it is out of place. The bar has a pleasant airy atmosphere but doesn't lend itself to chatting with other customers. The bar staff were efficient but not quite as welcoming as they could be given it wasn't that busy. On the other hand they are trying hard with scheduled events such as the weekly home made burger night when I visited. I ordered one and it was good food and good value at £11.95. For beer; St Austell Tribute, 'Gales' HSB and Harvey's Sussex Best were on hand pump. The Harvey's (£5.30 a pint) was average, over chilled and a little chewy but still drinkable (NBSS 3). I'm not sure it travels too well as I can never experience that crispness I remember. Overall the Solent is worth a visit for a casual pint or a meal and I would happily return.

Good traditional locals' local in the backstreets, retaining a two bar layout. The public bar has few frills but is quite fit for purpose, with a dartboard and a space for bands (but not at the same time!). The quieter lounge bar has had a bit of a facelift, with a few armchairs for relaxing in. There is a slightly scruffy garden to the side. Draught beers were Hobgoblin Gold, Landlord and Tribute and seemed well kept. Nice and unpretentious.
