An incredibly aged building (claims 12th century in parts – a sign claimed that tunnels lead from the bar through to the church and manor house hundreds of yards away) which hosts hotel rooms and wedding receptions as well as a public bar. Entrance lobby, turn right to a seating area with wobbly quarry tiled flooring and real fire. The bar is beyond, with dark beams and fabric wall hanging (looked aged) of a bloke on a horse. Despite the agedness of the building, bits of it are desperately need a spruce-up, one wall in the main seating area was crumbling. A massive grassed rear garden was highly impressive. Quiet inside, not many punters and a bit of an odd atmosphere though at least some papers were available. One ale, Theakston XB (iffy) and a Rebellion brewery dispenser (not technically real ale but better than nowt). To add insult to injury, my Theakston was ludicrously expensive at £4.20. Could be one of Berkshire’s best – but isn’t.

Although the frontage appears to be an old village inn, it is actually a 4-star hotel.
