A 16th century coaching inn on the busy London Road just over the road from the Grand Union Canal, this pub feels a little unloved but could be outstanding in the right hands. The L shaped interior has three distinct sections with a public bar area to the left of the entrance ,dominated by a pool table in the centre and a flat screen broadcasting day time TV, creating an unwelcome distraction. The flag stoned central area has a large inglenook fire in working order but with both settles cluttered with junk and some dodgy brickwork and poor decoration. In front of the fire was a mixture of dining room tables and a sofa detracting from the wonderful fireplace. The long bar runs between these drinking section and contained three handpumps, two reversed and the third offering that bete noire of ale lovers,GK IPA.The barman said Tring Sidepocket was coming on later, but we didn't have all day to find out.
At the rear of the pub is a raised dining area with Thai food, and this part of the operation looked professional .However I stuck with the bar snack menu with good sandwiches at £4 or baquettes at £5,plus other pub grub staples.
There is a large rear garden, but the overriding impression is of a tacky modernisation which has obscured some traditional features.A bit sticky around the edges,a modest investment and some TLC could create an iconic pub.

The Cow Roast Inn is a charming 16th Century coaching inn very close to the Grand Union canal and on the main A4251 road.
For many years it's been part pub and part Thai restaurant and in addition to the extensive Thai menu there's also a shorter, more basic pub snack menu.
The interior has some delightful traditional features such as an original inglenook fireplace and stone flagged floor in the bar area beyond which is a pool table and, somewhat incongruously, large tv screen showing daytime telly on our visit. The Thai restaurant area is distinct from the bar and has modern tables and chairs all laid out for dining. Unfortunately, the bar area is all very tired and could really do with a bit of tlc to spruce it up and make the best of its delightful features.
The only ale available was GK IPA which I couldn't face so had a perfectly acceptable Guiness. There was also a handpump with a half turned Tring Sidepocket clip which was promised in 20 minutes but sadly didn't appear before we left.
This is a lovely building with a well established restaurant which just needs a little care taken on its bar area and beers to be an outstanding pub.
