Bucking Fastard left this review about The Chequers

A Vintage Inns in a genuinely old building apart from the dining extension to the left, set well back from the busy main road with a good sized carpark. The interior is rustic ,but then so is the building with it's low ceiling making life very difficult for someone my size, the barmad was most sympathetic. The tap room has a real fire to the right kicking out some good heat and giving atmosphere.Further to the right are a nesting of rooms, two with real fires and the lowest level having a small inglenook. It's all quite charming although the fruit machine does give away the chain vibe, while dining is possible every where given the numbered tables.Muzak was r&b ballards creating a dirge.
However food doesn't dominate and folk do just drop in for a beer. The two options on my trip were Sharp's Doom Bar and Marston's Wainwright Gold,NBSS 3 hints of honey were distinct.
A superior ale range would have added extra points, but this is one of the better pubs in Stevenage which tells you a lot about the other options in town.
