Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Mermaid

A fine old-fashioned boozer, handily located between the city centre and the main line station but on a quieter road than the most direct route. Traditional interior with fairly basic furniture, bare boards and plenty of breweriana. Also has a couple of benches and a rear beer garden. Two banks of three handpumps, offering a solid selection of cask ales from smaller breweries (some local), plus an extensive selection of ciders. With a beer festival on, there were also stillages outside but this had been so successful that all those had sold out, so I went back indoors to get a 3 Brewers IPA (£5.00).

I wanted to call in here again because the last time I was here a wasp tried to share my beer, and when I raised my glass to my mouth - it was my beer, after all - I received a sting. No such trauma this time, but the three beers on the bar were a little pedestrian, and while the beer festival line up in the garden was a little more interesting, the two beers I tried were unmemorable. I recommend the reviews below instead.

The bar curves around as you enter the pub. There's 3 pumps in front of you, a cider one on the corner, then 3 more round to the left. Oakham Citra is represented on both, so that leaves 5 ales as well as a limited craft keg selection and a couple of Czech-ish beers.

There's plenty of seating at various tables; pies are the main food offer. The music is set one level too high in my opinion, but it's all very pleasant and relaxing in here, with a good choice of beers, so I'm more than happy to recommend and consider a repeat visit on any return to St Albans.
