This rambling hotel bar was stop 5 on our Black Friday Hertford crawl and promised the first decent pint of real ale since we left the Hertford Club as the first venue. It was absolutely packed out by the time we got here so I had some difficulty enjoying the period features. It’s a Mac’s pub and AK and Country were on the bar. I went for the AK and it was absolutely shocking. One of our group went for a can of Ginness Zero and he got a much better deal.
Nice building, poor pub.

ORIGINAL REVIEW Dec 2010
A typical County town hotel with an attractive curved and semi glazed front door,a guests private lounge to the left ,front bar to the right and the most attractive feature ,the back bar off the corridor past the reception desk. There is a restaurant at the end of this corridor. The front bar has Sky Sports TV,can get cramped and a little laddish at peak times and is fully visible from the street, while the back bar is calmer ,has some very traditional wood panneling and more upmarket furniture. However the frosted windows are small and run just below the ceiling,so there is not much natural light ,I find this bar better in the evening. The traditional hotel feeling is maintained by bar staff in waistcoats, but the ale is a let down, often in poor condition at this Mc Mullens tied house which features all four of their beers AK,Country,Cask and IPA .Worth a visit for the interior if not the ale.
November 2011
All change at The Salisbury Arms. There is now a pub grub menu available in the bar areas ,and sadly the rear bar is now given over to dining, menus everywhere and the serving counter largely unused.Drinkers congregate in the front bar,but pub grub served here too and this seems to dominate proceedings nowadays.Macs beers still indifferent but at least the interior decor is traditional, even the stained brown ceiling is reminiscent of days before the smoking ban.I didn't eat,but plenty were so maybe the food is better than the menu implies.
UPDATE
Reopenend in December 2022 after an extensive refurb, this hotel bar now looks very smart. The left snug is no longer a residents only area and the tables are laid for the pub grub diners in a club like interior style. The right sided rooms have now been knocked together and the bar runs along the rear wall. However the oak beams, old fireplace and wood panelling have been preserved, this is now a substantial space for both diners and drinkers.A rear courtyard has been exposed and sits between two wings, one to the loo the other to the formal dining room.
The reception is now much larger and the fine curved and glazed entrance door is still there.
The downsides are overloud muzak , poor cellaring and inept service. My Bootwarmer was out of condition (NBSS 2) and a short measure was pulled.Only up to three Mc Mullen real ales so not a destination when in town despite the smart appearance both externally and internally.

A labyrinthine 16th century hotel, with a gorgeous pargetted exterior and an equally lovely rambling interior, with lots of dark wood panelling and odd corridors. There seems to be a room either side of the little bar, with a separate lounge at the front and a large function room behind, but there could be more in the depths. Unfortunately the beer does not live up to the surroundings. The usual McMullens selection of Country, AK and seasonal (Solstice) was badged - the latter was off and the Country should have been. One for a posh lunch rather than drinking at, but gains an extra point for heritage.
