A pleasing exterior which tempted me in with a sign for real ales and home made food.I needn't have bothered as the landlord explained there is no food only crisps,peanuts and scratchings and the sole handpump was offering the ever dull GK IPA at £3.20.The exterior signage really does need to change.
The interior is open plan and carpeted but non descript with a pool table to the right by a boarded up fireplace,a darts board to the left but with a general lack of furniture making the place feel a bit empty.There is little decoration of interest on the walls.There was also a sparse covering of customers too,I was the first and a regular turned up later on.Daytime TV blaring from the flat screen didn't help create any sort of positive atmosphere and I didn't detect any community connection with the pub,no darts or pool team for instance.It has the feel of the dead hand of pubco ownership ,where leasees change on a regular basis once their wad runs out,and this may explain the lack of food on this occasion,the kitchen is there just unused.
The pub backs onto the River Lea with a few picnic tables just feet from the waters edge.However the unnavigable Lea floods regularly at this point,often putting the pub out of action for quite a while and probably not helping the viability of the place.
I have lived in the area for 20 years and this was my first visit,and judging by the current offering most likely to be my last.
