A medium-sized Greene King town pub with a large outdoor area at the rear. Pleasant enough but pretty unexceptional and typical of the breed. Just IPA and Abbot on handpump.

ORIGINAL REVIEW March 2011
Reopened 5/2/10 after a thorough refurb by Greene King. The focus of the pub has changed completely to a food orientation principally at lunchtime ,including a range of coffees.Mains around £7 but from a very standard looking menu.Three handpumps with GK IPA,Abbott and a seasonal GK brew, but gone are the days of live music, karaoke and the laddish sportsbar atmosphere.Quite a shock to see this new incarnation, now a much more respectable looking establishment.Still has the impressive rear garden in this town centre location.
There is a popular quiz every Thursday evening at 8.30pm which certainly brings in a good size crowd, the bar staff are very friendly and efficient.

September 2014

Still owned by Greene King but now with six handpumps serving GK IPA & IPA Reserve,Hogs Back TEA,TT Boltmakers(coming soon),Everards Tiger and Vale VPA,in very good nick,£3.60.A huge improvement with only two GK brews to avoid ,making this pub well worth a visit if you are looking for a range of decent real ale in Hertford.A deserved upgrade in rating from me.Still got the best beer garden in town as well.

November 2014

Gone backwards on the ale front.Only two genuine guests with a "Westgate Brewery " Fireside purporting to be a guest but actually another GK product to add to their 2 other offerings and a handpump now for Old Rosie Cider. The guest choices of Goddards Scrum Diggety and York Guzzler were somewhat mundane. If visiting on a Thursday evening virtually all tables are reserved for quizzers who pitch up at 9pm.Some drinkers were forced into the beer garden as a result of a sea of reserved but unoccupied tables well before the quiz starts.

UPDATE

Now reverted to no guests, just GK crap from three handpumps.Downgrade and not worth the bother.

Danny O'Revey left this review about Duncombe Arms

Modern fitted Greene King chain pub. It still holds little bits of character, like the small brick fireplace. Some cosmopolitan furniture. pictures of the castle on the walls. Modern playlist, looks like they are trying to attract families & is quite a neutral place.

4 real ales are very well kept.
