Another visit, another disappointment at this locally-lauded pub – I went for the two Rebellion beers, Roasted Nuts (NBSS 2.5, tired) and Overthrow (dire, 1). I’m either the unluckiest toper in Berkshire or maybe this place isn’t as good as the local CAMRA wallahs say it is.

So in the interim between my first visit and this one, the pub has been purchased by the local community – welcome news. There has been a fair (and welcome) amount of tidying-up; it’s now whitewashed and carpeted inside, perhaps feels a bit too clinical but I guess things will soften bed-in, as they often seem to do in publand. The rear garden is also much improved. Pretty busy, with a local and chatty clientele as well as the football being shown to a small but fanatical audience. Five ales on the go, all local. Unfortunately both my choices (W&E Guardsman and Loose Cannon Recoil) were warm and pump-tired; either extra line cooling is required or they’re simply not shifting enough. It’s early days though, and I expect I’ll be back to see how things are going in a few months. 6.5

A very basic L shaped boozer that nonetheless had local three ales on the go - West Berks GOB, XT15 and Rebellion IPA. My XT was in good nick though Desmond wasn’t happy that the local football team who came in just behind us seemed to be taking priority in serving stakes. Darts to the right, sports TV to the left and a jukey. Basic patio garden to rear. Dominoes and crib spotted. The ale makes it worth a look-in even the pub itself is pretty unremarkable. Rated 6
