This Charles Wells tied house is at the edge of the town circuit and the bench seats outside have fine views over the Common, shame the road passing outside is so busy.It retains a traditional two room layout, the smaller public bar runs along the roadside and has a wooden floor and flatscreen while the larger lounge with it's red carpet is L shaped, quieter and has traditional fittings with a well polished copper fireplace flue. There is also an inaccessible dartboard and an unfurled draw down screen in this room while there are solid bar chairs around the serving area. The leaded windows and low ceilings complete the trad feel.
Four handpumps serving Bombardier,Eagle IPA and "Youngs" Ordinary (well kept £3.25)will hardly set the pulse racing but the pub food offering is very solid with a fresh salad accompanying a tuna & mayo baguette (£5.75) justifying the premium price.Other menu items looked well cooked and wholesome.
I wouldn't base myself here for a real ale session, but I would return for the food in this very upmarket corner of Hertfordshire.

I didn't think this was going to be any good from afar but glad I made the effort to get there. It offers a bit of everything really, there's B&B accommodation (£75/£95 for single/double inc breakfast), a restaurant and a drinkers bar at the front with Sky Sports. The menu covers bar snacks to full meals. Ales are Eagle IPA, Bombardier and a changing guest which was Brains Merlin's Oak on my visit. Service was excellent, the place seems well run and I got the impression they often try new ideas to improve their offering. Despite the small drinkers bar in relation to the restaurant area this is a pub that I'd recommend.

Lovely old pub which also serves decent food at a fair price. Nice location as well. They had Wells' Bombardier, Eagle IPA, Eagle Smooth and Caledonian 80 on tap, and said a guest ale was coming soon. Has Cask Marque certification
