After a few minutes here, a night when folk musicians were tuning up, and mundane beers like Greene King IPA and Titanic Plum Porter on the bar, I began to wander what the fuss was all about. My half of Abbot was not as good as at the Cock in Broom on my way here, and the Tring Mansion Mild was maybe only a tad better (call it NBSS 3.75 across the pair), but when I started looking around at the various rooms, the landlord was prompted to show me around. The porch leads by doors either side to a public bar to the right and a small tap room on the left, leading to a larger room where the music was preparing. Through the public is a small off sales hatch (not functional, and not original either, having been bought in from another pub to replace one that was scrapped. Out the back are various outdoor spaces, including a petanque court. There is a huge collection of vintage beers on display but not for sale. Five or six real ales and a similar number of ciders, what's not to like (apart from the folk music, obv). Currently in the running for CAMRA pub of the year, and the publican reckons they're "punching above their weight", but with his warm, welcoming personality, who knows?

An excellent locals' pub in a residential area just out of town. It just about qualifies as a multi-roomer with lots of different spaces scattered round the central bar, all with a nicely homespun sort of feel. Good and friendly too, with knowledgeable staff. The icing on the cake is the beer range (not to mention the 'proper' ciders): Anarchy Blond Star, Acorn Barnsley Bitter, Buntingford Princess, Titanic Plum Porter, Brewsters Hophead and Tring Mansion Mild, along with the mandatory Abbot and IPA. Definitely the best pub in the area.

Not much from the outside but large, multi spaces pub with quality real ale. A nice alround pub
