Situated on one of the busiest streets in Hereford this pub can seem a step back into the 70s. Low Chesterfield sofas, moulded cane furniture, red leather topped stools. A small wood panel bar covered in horse brasses and a fussy Axminster carpet, curtains complete with swags. But its all well kept, neat and tidy with a very pleasant landlady. The bar has two handpulls with Wye Valley Ales. Butty Bach and HS Bitter. Both nicely served. Not far from the railway station and close to one of Herefords bus station it well placed for a crawl. Wetherspoons is across the road if you can tear yourself away from the Butty Bache.
The County Hospital is close by. However much you have had to drink you will not outrun an Ambulance when crossing the road.Thats just a little local knowledge.

Popped in for a swift couple of halves before catching the train back. The inside felt very much like a hotel bar that had experienced a quick makeover to turn it into a 'proper' drinking venue. The décor was very burgundy and fairly plush, if I recall, and there was a TV at one end of the room. It was clean and comfy enough.
Two ales were on - Wye Valley HPA and a Spinning Dog beer. True to the form of the day, the Wye Valley beer was excellent and the SD was flat and lifeless (though given my experience of the SD beer in it's own brewery tap - the Victory - I'm inclined to give the Merton the benefit of the doubt).
If you've got a 20 minute wait for a train, it's worth a stop.
