We entered the pub via St Thomas Street and was met with a steep timber staircase into the main lounge. This is a long and narrow pub with the bar area tucked away at the far end. The interior hosts a lot of timber, original oak ceiling beams, panelling, floorboards along with all the tables and chairs.
Unfortunately nothing exciting beer wise, GK IPA, Abbot, Wadworth 6X, Tribute, Royal Oak House Beer and Rocking Rudolph.

When in Winchester don't be put off by Greene King insignia,for you may find some interesting guests which worked out on my crawl visit .The pub is well below street level,the tap room is long and at the end there are two sunken snugs,one of which can be hired by groups.The furniture was in light pine and modern,corporate menus were on dispay at most tables and the dirge muzak was far too loud,but at the bar besides GK IPA and Abbott there were two guests in Andwell Resolute and Flower Pots Goodens Gold (NBSS 4) .A further guest was coming soon but if this is a Local Heroes lease,the number of guests must be matched by GK brews so this additional guests may just replace one that has run out.
Maybe we were lucky,but a decent pint,friendly barmaids and a lively atmosphere rewarded the brave decision to enter at 6pm on a Friday,driven initially by the need to access the gents !

The Royal Oak has claims to be the oldest pub in England,I'm sure that's very debatable,what's less debatable is that it's a rather run of the mill tourist pub, a purveyor of meal deals and ordinary beer, Hop Back Summer Lightning aside there was a bland lineup of GK Abbot ,IPA and London's Glory plus Westerham British Bulldog, which turned out to be poorly conditioned as well as bland. Obviously its an old building with a few hidden seating areas here and there but it's all a little to sterile and contrived to convince. Not a pub I would choose to return to.
